today the bigwave surf contest is being held on the Nelscott Reef. this is a picture from the 2010 event. the reef is about 1/4 mile to sea, and about 20 ' below the surface of the water. when the energy from a big swell collides with the reef and a wave jacks up to about twice the swell. this afternoon it is expected to be between 20 and 28 feet. the swell will arrive late in the afternoon. i hope to get some great pictures. this is not a tow in event, this is a very late take-off paddle in event and from a surfers perspective is what is meant by being committed, way committed. steve
